VatnajÖkull Crossing
In April 2023, Darren was part of the first all-disabled team to cross Europe’s largest Ice Cap, the mighty Vatnajokull in Iceland. Alongside Ed Jackson and Niall McCann, the team of three individuals with Spinal Cord Injuries (SCI) overcame huge challenges to complete their epic unsupported journey in just 11 days.
The team travelled over 138 kilometres and crossed fields of crevasses, mountains taller than Ben Nevis, and temperatures plummeting as low as -27C. Battling through a storm that threatened to end their expedition, Darren faced the toughest physical and mental test since his life-changing accident in 2016.
The expedition raised over £20,000 for Millimetres 2 Mountains, a charity supporting young people who have been through significant physical/mental trauma. It is the hope of Darren, Ed, and Niall that by completing this gruelling expedition, they will inspire others with Spinal Cord Injuries to take on challenges in their own lives.
